CAS SAMBA Round - Contemporary Pharmacology in Ambulatory Anesthesia: Focus on Remimazolam and Beyond

May 6, 2026

8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This session will provide a focused update on contemporary pharmacology in ambulatory anesthesia, with particular emphasis on remimazolam, a novel ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine with growing clinical applications in procedural sedation and general anesthesia. The discussion will highlight its pharmacologic profile, clinical advantages, and practical considerations in comparison with established agents.

In addition, the session will briefly review other important pharmacologic developments relevant to current practice, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and their perioperative implications, intravenous amisulpride for postoperative nausea and vomiting, and sugammadex for neuromuscular blockade reversal. Emerging concepts in analgesic pharmacology will also be introduced, offering a glimpse into potential future directions in perioperative care.

After attending this round, participants will be able to:

  1. Review the pharmacology, mechanism of action, and clinical applications of remimazolam in ambulatory anesthesia and procedural sedation, including its role in adult and pediatric practice.
  2. Discuss contemporary advances in perioperative pharmacology relevant to ambulatory anesthesia, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, intravenous amisulpride for prevention and rescue treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and sugammadex for neuromuscular blockade reversal.
  3. Describe future directions in anesthetic pharmacology and perioperative analgesia, including novel opioid compounds currently in preclinical development and their potential implications for safer pain management.
